Origin: Winter Haven, Florida

Career began: 2002–present

The Name 'Anberlin'
According to Wikipedia, there are several explanations to how the band got their name, but apparently the 'real' version is that it came from the Radiohead song "Everything in Its Right Place":
"There are several stories that have circulated on the internet, but the actual story is when I was in college my favorite band was Radiohead; on one of their songs off the record Kid A there is a background noise on the song "Everything in Its Right Place" (about 2 minutes 31 seconds into the song). While Thom (Yorke) is singing try to say I always thought the background noise sounded like Anberlin, I always thought that Anberlin would have been a great band name and well ... it was/is."

Anberlin are an American rock band from Winter Haven, Florida. The band has released four full-length records, 2008's New Surrender saw the band reach new levels with the Neal Avron produced album reaching No.13 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums charts, and the single "Feel Good Drag" reaching No.1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Charts.
Lead singer Stephen Christian met bassist Deon Rexroat while they were both in high school, and they formed a punk band called SaGoh 24/7 (see video below) along with drummer Sean Hutson and guitarist Joseph Milligan in the late 1990s. The band released two albums under Rescue Records, Servants After God's Own Heart (1999), and Then I Corrupt Youth (2001), before splitting.

Joined by Nathan Young on druns, Anberlin was formed in 2002. They then teamed up with producer Matt Goldman to record five demos, which were posted on PureVolume (mp3.com at the time). It sparked interest from various record labels, but following advice from friends including Chad Johnson, and Timmy McTague from Underoath, the band signed with Tooth & Nail Records, and within the year, had signed with to the Tooth & Nail Record company. They released their debut album, 'Blueprints for the Black Market' in 2003.

Oof the five demos Anberlin recorded, three were eventually chosen to be reworked for the band's debut album, the lead single "Readyfuels", "Driving" (later rbecame "Autobahn") and "Foreign Language". Barely a year after their formation, their first album as a new band was entitled Blueprints for the Black Market (2003). It failed to chart, but their debut single, "Readyfuels", album sold over 60,000 units. Rhythm guitarist Joey Bruce was eventually ejected from the band and finally replaced by Nathan Strayer from 'The Mosaic'.

In 2005, the band released their second album, 'Never Take Friendship Personal' in early 2005, which sold in excess of 150,000 copies, reaching No. 144 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Two singles were released from the album: "A Day Late" and "Paperthin Hymn", the latter peaking at the No.38 on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. Three to four weeks prior to the release of Cities, it was announced that guitarist Nathan Strayer had left the band amicably to go back to his former band 'The Mosaic' and that Christian McAlhaney, formerly of the band 'Acceptance', would take over as the new guitarist.

Anberlin's third album 'Cities' was released in early 2007 under the title Cities. It sold 34,000 copies in its first week, reaching No.19 on the Billboard 200 and Digital Charts, No.6 on their Rock Chart, and No.2 on their Top Christian Albums Chart.
A compilation album of unreleased material, called Lost Songs, was released on 20 November 2007 featuring B-sides, demos, covers, and acoustic versions of their previous songs, as well as other tracks recorded at AOL Sessions.

In 2007, Anberlin signed with major label Universal Republic Records. Their first outing with the label entitled 'New Surrender' was released on 30 September 2008. It reached No.13 on the Billboard 200, selling 36,000 units in it's first week, and No.13 on the Billboard Digital Chart. It also reached No.5 in their Rock, and Alternative Album Charts, and No.1 on their Top Christian Albums Chart. The first official single from the album was the re-recorded "Feel Good Drag" which was released on 26 August. It claimed the No.1 position on the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart. The album was gained No.33 position on Billboard's Top Christian Albums Chart of 2008, and No.18 on the same Chart in 2009.

Their new album, 'Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place' was released in September 2010 and reached No.1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums Chart. The album took its title from a line in Dylan Thomas’ "Poem on His Birthday".
(verse 6)
And freely he goes lost
In the unknown, famous light of great
And fabulous, dear God.
Dark is a way and light is a place,
Heaven that never was
Nor will be ever is always true,
And, in that brambled void,
Plenty as blackberries in the woods
The dead grow for His joy.

Flyleaf

Flyleaf

Christian rock band Flyleaf

Origin:

Belton and Temple, Texas

Members:

Lacey Mosley – lead vocals

Sameer Bhattacharya – lead guitar, backing vocals

Jared Hartmann – rhythm guitar

Pat Seals – bass, backing vocals

James Culpepper – drums, percussion

Flyleaf (originally called Passerby), are a Christian alternative rock band from Texas. In early 2005, the band’s self-titled debut EP, produced by Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Blind Melon) and Brad Cook (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age), was released with tracks such as Breathe Today, Cassie and I’m Sorry which were later to appear on Flyleaf’s full length album was released on October 4, 2005.

Five years ago, Mosley started playing music with drummer James Culpepper. The two joined up with Bhattacharya and Hartmann, who were in a local band that had just split up. “Our first practice together was awesome,” Mosley says. “Sameer and Jared are really experimental with melodies and pedals, and we all had different influences that were all blending together with the same passionate and hopeful heart, and that brought out this beautiful feeling. It was magical.” Bassist Pat Seals joined in 2002. “The doors were open and I just happened to walk through at the right time,” Seals says.

Flyleaf played anywhere they could slowly but consistently increasing their fanbase with local bands and national acts like Riddlin Kids, Bowling for Soup, Fishbone, and Evanescence.

Flyleaf’s self-titled debut album echoes with songs about abuse, neglect, addiction and dysfunction, and messages about overcoming adversity. And the band’s wide array of brooding beats, atmospheric textures and lunging riffs compliment Mosley’s emotionally revealing lyrics, which range from breathy and beautiful to scathing and aggressive.

“I used to be in a really negative band, and that seemed to almost fuel my emptiness because that’s what the songs were about,” says charismatic singer Lacey Mosley. “That’s why I think what we’re doing is important because there needs to be something heavy out there that has a positive message so people see that it’s possible to get through the worst situations.”

Flyleaf’s infectiously heavy positivism is all the more surprising considering Mosley’s struggles while growing up. “My mom was a young single mother of six,” she explains. “We didn’t have money and things were hard for all of us. We moved whenever we couldn’t make ends meet in one place, and that happened pretty often so there was a lot of struggling, suffering and character building.
“It’s easy to get depressed when you’re dealing with that kind of stress,” she continues, “especially when it looks like things will never get better. There was nothing constant in my life, and nothing to believe in. I got into some really bad stuff that I thought would make me feel more loved, or maybe just numb, but it cost me everything that was important to me, and literally almost took my life.”

The album reached No.88 on the Billboard 200. Single releases include "I'm So Sick", "Fully Alive", and "All Around Me". In October 30, 2007, the band re-released and reached No.62 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.

The title is a Latin phrase meaning "be mindful of death" or "remember you will die." Memento Mori reached at No.8 on the Billboard 200 Chart, selling 56,000 units in its opening week, No.2 on their Rock Chart and No.1 on their Christian, Alternative, and Hard Rock Charts.
